New Thesis Direction

So I've kind of hit a wall with my thesis and I think that this is the direction I need to move in. Less reliance the moment and the quality of the print. Time to play with the memory, bring it back, recontextualize the image. This is just a test. The photo of Shaheer was actually taken at my sisters place in Montreal.

These images are obviously concerned with notions of death, but beyond that they are about my family (and your family) and our attempts at not forgetting those who we’ve lost. Most people would probably be disgusted at the idea that someone is taking pictures at a funeral. This attempt at photographing my family in such a difficult time is how I pay my respects. I’m thinking critically about life and love and all this in regards to the recently deceased (my great uncle Julian Nesbitt). My own grandfather, Julian’s brother in-law, took many photos of Julian in the past. This is almost a way of adding to my grandfather’s photographic timeline and my family’s history in general. I can only hope that when I die people care enough about me to take pictures at my funeral.

Pierogi Mondays

Since moving into his own place last winter, my gracious and very talented friend Chris, along with his old roommate and childhood friend Arup decided that it would be a good idea to have a bunch of us over for a night of drinks, food and collective art-making. The food of choice was pierogies and for drinks, we enjoyed some Jack followed closely by Pabst Blue and cigarettes. These meetings continued throughout the winter season, usually falling on a Monday. I don’t know who coined the term, but somehow it developed into the highly anticipated event known as Pierogie Mondays. Chris now lives with his also very talented and beautiful girlfriend Shannon. They have been kind enough to have, at times, 24 of us to their small apartment on Dundas in order to continue the tradition.

Perogie Mondays gives us something to look forward to after weekends full of hangovers (good scenario) or assignments (bad scenario). It has created a comfortable collective in which we can share our accomplishments from the week past and what we are looking forward to in the weeks to come. We can talk art, nog and the outrageous TTC situations that Rob Ford instigates. I think this weekly get-together is something that more people should be doing (at least in the winter). If you have a group of people that you care about, make them some food while obligating them bring their own beer. Put on some music without fear of dancing. Create anthems that can be sung along to. It doesn’t have to be something as significant New Years or Passover in order to find a reason to celebrate. Just celebrate each other (over whisky).

The holidays came and we ran off to beautiful French Canada in search of poutine, beer in connivence stores and krazy karpets. I was very happy with doing everything we would usually do in Toronto, but with a French twist. It's also a huge bonus to have Mary Jane Delivered in -35 with the windchill. Next year I'm making sure to go to Schwartz's twice!

New York was a very welcome change from what's been happening here in Toronto land over the past couple of months. I met a Group of people who call themselves "The Asylum". This is due to everyone always thinking they're crazy (this does not include Bob Dylan). They inhabit Washington Sq. Park and when the park closes at 12:00 am, they move over to MacDougal St. and play the blues all night long. These men changed my life, I'm honored to have shared my 21st birthday with them. Never again will I walk past flowers without smelling them (Thank you Peter, the guitars on its way).
